Converting is not compressing. Going to PNG makes most photographs larger, and no conversion can put back detail an earlier JPG already discarded.

Why people do this conversion
Logos and icons on a website
Loaded on every page, so the saving is multiplied by every visit. Transparency is preserved, which is why JPG was never an option.
Screenshots in documentation
Interface screenshots are large as PNG and compress extremely well as WebP with no visible change to the text.
An illustration-heavy page
Flat colour and hard edges are what PNG is worst at storing cheaply, and where WebP gains the most.
Passing a page-speed audit
Oversized PNGs are the most common single reason a page fails an image-weight check.
The conversion with the biggest saving
Of all the conversions on this site, this one usually produces the most dramatic number. PNG stores every pixel exactly and pays a lot for the privilege. WebP stores the same picture, keeps the transparency, and frequently comes out at a quarter of the size or less.
That matters most for exactly the images that tend to be PNGs: logos, icons, illustrations, screenshots and interface graphics. These are the images a website loads on every single page.
Transparency survives
This is the part that distinguishes it from converting a PNG to JPG. WebP has a full alpha channel, so a cut-out stays a cut-out, soft edges stay soft, and a logo still sits properly on a coloured background. Nothing has to be filled in and no decision has to be made.
Lossy or lossless
WebP can do both. The quality slider here produces lossy WebP, which is what gives the large savings and is right for nearly everything on a website.
At quality 90 a logo or an icon is visually identical to the PNG. Below about 80 you may start to see faint noise around hard edges, which is the same weakness JPG has and the reason not to push the setting down on graphics with text in them.

Keep the PNG
The WebP is the published copy. The PNG is the master you edit and re-export from. Since this conversion is lossy, going back and forth repeatedly would degrade the graphic each time — so convert from the PNG whenever you need a new WebP, rather than from the last WebP.
Where not to use it
Anywhere off the web. An icon for a desktop application, a graphic for a print job, a file you are emailing to somebody — all of those still want PNG. WebP earns its place inside a browser.
Common questions
Does WebP keep transparency?
Yes, fully. A transparent background stays transparent, including soft and partially transparent edges. Nothing needs to be filled in.
How much smaller will it be?
Usually a great deal. Screenshots and logos commonly drop by 50 to 85%, and a photograph that had been saved as PNG can drop by more than 90%.
Is this lossy?
Yes, at the quality setting shown. At 90 it is visually identical for logos and screenshots; below about 80 faint noise can appear around hard edges.
Should I delete the PNG?
No. Keep it as the master. Since the conversion is lossy, always re-export from the PNG rather than converting a WebP again.
Can I use WebP outside a website?
Often not. Desktop applications, print workflows and upload forms frequently reject it. WebP is for publishing on the web; keep PNG or JPG for everything else.
