Why a cut cannot always land where you put it
Video is not stored as a sequence of pictures. Every second or two there is a complete frame — a keyframe — and everything between them is stored as the difference from the frame before it. That is most of why video files are as small as they are.
It also creates a problem that every trimming tool has and almost none explain.
The keyframe problem
If you cut at a moment that is not a keyframe, the first frame of your clip is a description of a difference from a frame you just threw away. There is nothing to apply it to. So a cut that copies the video without re-encoding can only begin at a keyframe, and it starts at the nearest one at or before the point you chose.
On a phone recording, keyframes are usually a second or two apart. On something exported for streaming they can be further. So a fast cut can begin up to a couple of seconds early. It never loses the part you wanted — it just includes a little before it.

Fast is right for most cutting, because a second of extra footage at the front rarely matters and keeping the original quality does. Exact is right when the cut has to be tight — a clip that starts on a word, a loop, anything going into an edit.
This tool checks where the cut actually landed and tells you when a fast cut has moved. Most tools do not, which is why people conclude the trimmer is broken when it is doing the only thing it can.
Cutting is not compressing
Worth separating, because they get confused. Cutting removes time; the part you keep is untouched. Compressing keeps all the time and stores it with less detail.
If you are trying to get under a size limit, try cutting first. Half the length is half the file, at no cost to how it looks. Only compress what is left if it is still too big — in that order you lose the least.
No watermark, and no account
Free online trimmers overwhelmingly do one of three things: stamp their logo into your video, cap the length, or ask you to sign up before the download. All three exist because your file is on their server and the server costs money.
This runs in your browser. There is no server, so there is nothing to pay for and nothing to recoup — which is why there is no watermark, no length cap and no account. It is also why a large file is not a problem: nothing is uploaded, so there is no wait and no queue.
What happens to the sound
A fast cut copies the audio along with the picture, so it is unchanged. An exact cut re-encodes it to AAC at 160 kbps, which is transparent for speech and fine for most music.
If what you actually want is the audio on its own, cutting first and then extracting is the better order — it means the extraction only has to handle the part you kept.
Common questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. The cut happens in your browser using your own processor, so the file never leaves your machine. That is why there is no size limit, no queue and no account.
Is there a watermark or a length limit?
Neither. Both exist on other tools because your file is sitting on their server and that costs them money. Nothing is uploaded here, so there is nothing to recoup.
Why did my clip start earlier than I set it?
Because a fast cut copies the video without re-encoding, and a copied cut can only begin at a keyframe — a complete stored frame, usually one every second or two. It starts at the nearest one before your point. Choose Exact if the start has to be precise.
Which mode should I use?
Fast for most things: it is instant and the quality is identical to the original. Exact when the cut has to be tight — a clip that starts on a particular word, or anything going into an edit.
Does cutting reduce the file size?
Yes, roughly in proportion to how much you remove — half the length is about half the file. Unlike compressing, it costs nothing in quality, so if you are trying to get under a limit it is the thing to try first.
What formats can it cut?
MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and most others. Some formats will not preview in the browser even though they can be cut — when that happens the tool reads the length itself and you pick the points by the numbers.
Can I cut several pieces out of one video?
Not in one pass. Cut the first piece and save it, then load the original again for the next. Each cut is independent, and in Fast mode none of them costs any quality.
