Why people take the audio out of a video
A talk, a lecture, an interview
The picture is a static slide or a person sitting still. The sound is the whole content, and it is a fraction of the size to keep or to listen to on a phone.
Music from a video you filmed
A gig, a rehearsal, a recital. The audio is what you wanted; the video was just how your phone recorded it.
Getting a recording into an editor
Audio editors and transcription tools often want a plain audio file, not a video container.
Making something small enough to send
A ten-minute video is hundreds of megabytes. The same ten minutes of audio is a few, and every mail system accepts it.
The part almost every converter gets wrong
The audio inside a video file is already compressed. It was encoded once, when the video was made — usually as AAC, sometimes as Opus or MP3 — and it is sitting there as a complete, separate stream alongside the picture.
Which means there are two quite different things a tool can do when you ask for the sound.
Copying versus re-encoding
It can copy that stream straight out. No decoding, no re-encoding, nothing thrown away. The result is bit-for-bit the audio that was in the video, in a file of its own, and it takes about as long as saving a file normally does.
Or it can decode the stream and compress it again as MP3. That is a second generation of lossy compression on top of the first. It is not catastrophic, but it is a real loss, applied to something that had already lost detail once, and it takes time proportional to the length of the video.
Most converters do the second one without mentioning that the first was an option, because MP3 is what people typed into the search box. This one offers both: MP3 for something that plays on any device made in the last twenty-five years, and Original for the track untouched.

What you cannot do
Worth saying plainly, because a lot of tools imply otherwise: the audio cannot come out better than it went in. If a video was recorded with a quiet, muffled 64 kbps track, exporting it at 320 kbps produces a larger file containing exactly the same quiet, muffled sound. The higher number describes how much room the new file has, not how much detail is in it.
So 192 kbps is a sensible default and 320 is worth it only for music from a good source. Above the bitrate the original was recorded at, you are storing the compression artefacts in higher fidelity.
Why the file gets so much smaller
A video is mostly picture. In a typical recording the sound is somewhere between two and ten per cent of the total, and everything else is frames. Taking the audio out is not compressing anything — it is discarding the ninety-odd per cent you did not want.
That is why a 400 MB lecture becomes a 12 MB file that sounds identical. Nothing was squeezed; the picture was simply dropped.
Separating a voice from the music behind it
This page does something different from what people sometimes mean by "get the voice out of a video". It gives you the complete audio track: speech, music, background and all, exactly as it was recorded.
Pulling a voice away from the music mixed around it is a separate and much harder problem — it needs a machine-learning model that guesses at what each source contributed, and the result is approximate rather than exact. If that is what you need, this is still the right first step: get the audio out here, then run that file through a separation tool.
The video never leaves your computer
The audio engine is a build of ffmpeg compiled to run in the browser. It downloads once, about 32 MB, and after that it is cached and works with no connection at all.
That matters more here than for most conversions. Video files are large, so uploading one to a website means a long wait on your connection and a complete copy of your recording on somebody else’s server. Here the file is read from disk, processed on your own processor, and never transmitted — which is also why there is no size limit, no queue and no account.

What does "Original" do?
It copies the audio stream out of the video without decoding it, so the result is bit-for-bit what was already in the file. It is instant and loses nothing. MP3, by contrast, decodes that stream and compresses it a second time.
Which bitrate should I choose for MP3?
192 kbps unless the source is music you care about, in which case 320. Going above what the video was recorded at gains nothing — the audio cannot come out better than it went in, only larger.
Can I get just the voice, without the background music?
Not here. This gives you the complete audio track as recorded. Separating a voice from music mixed around it needs a machine-learning model and produces an approximation rather than the original. Extracting the audio here is the right first step before running it through one.
