A PDF page has no resolution until you pick one

This is the part that confuses people, and it explains every question about quality here.

A PDF page is not an image. It is a set of instructions — draw this line, set this text in this font at this size — measured in points, of which there are 72 to an inch. It has a physical size and no pixels at all. A page can be drawn at any resolution you like, and it will be sharp at every one of them, because the drawing is recalculated rather than enlarged.

So "what quality is this PDF" has no answer. The number you choose here is the answer.

Going higher than you need costs memory and time and gains nothing visible. 150 is the default because it is right nearly always.

JPG or PNG

It depends on what is on the page, and the usual advice is backwards for documents.

JPG suits photographs. It also softens hard edges, which is what text is made of — at a low setting you get a grey haze around every letter.

PNG is lossless and stores flat colour extremely well. For a page of text or a diagram it is both sharper and usually smaller than the JPG, which surprises people who have learned "PNG is the big one" from photographs.

So: photographs on the page, JPG. Text, tables, charts and line drawings, PNG.

What a scanned PDF gives you back

If the PDF is a scan, each page is already a photograph of paper wrapped in a document. Rendering it at 300 dpi does not recover detail the scanner never captured — it enlarges what is there. The right resolution for a scan is roughly the one it was scanned at, and beyond that you are storing the same information in a larger file.

Text becomes pixels

Worth stating because it is sometimes the reason for doing this and sometimes an accident. An image of a page cannot be searched, selected, copied or read aloud by a screen reader. Everything that made it a document is gone and what is left is a picture of one.

If you want a page that cannot be edited, that is exactly right. If you wanted the text, you wanted something else.

No upload, no page limit

The rendering happens in your browser using a build of pdf.js, the same engine Firefox uses to display PDFs. The document is never transmitted, which is why there is no page limit and no queue: the only constraint is your own machine, and it is a far more generous one than a free tier.

It matters for the things that arrive as PDFs — contracts, statements, medical letters, anything with a signature on it. Those are exactly the documents nobody should be uploading to a website to convert.

Common questions

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. It is rendered in your browser by pdf.js, the same engine Firefox uses, so the document never leaves your machine. That is also why there is no page limit and no queue.

What resolution should I choose?

150 dpi unless you have a reason. It is sharp on any screen and still reasonable to email. Choose 300 for printing or for anything that will be zoomed into, and 72 only for a small on-screen preview.

Should I use JPG or PNG?

JPG for pages with photographs on them. PNG for text, tables and diagrams, where it is both sharper and usually the smaller file — the opposite of what you would expect from photographs.

Can I convert only some pages?

Yes. Every page starts selected; click one to drop it, or press Clear and pick just the ones you want. One page comes down as an image and several as a ZIP.

Will the text still be selectable?

No. An image of a page is pixels, so the text cannot be searched, selected or read by a screen reader. That is the point if you want a page nobody can edit, and the wrong tool if you wanted the words.

Why is my file so large?

Resolution, almost always. An A4 page at 300 dpi is about 2480 by 3508 pixels, which is eight and a half megapixels per page. Drop to 150 and it quarters.

Is there a page limit?

None imposed here. The practical limit is memory, since each page is drawn at full size before it is encoded — a hundred pages at 300 dpi is a lot to hold at once. If it stalls, do it in chunks or drop the resolution.
