What a watermark does, and what it does not

A watermark is one of the oldest ideas in documents — literally a mark made in wet paper pulp, visible when held to the light, used since the 1200s to identify a mill. The digital version keeps the purpose: it tells you something about the document you are holding, on every page, without getting in the way of reading it.

It is a label, not a lock

This is the part worth being blunt about. A watermark is drawn on top of the page. The content underneath is completely intact, which is exactly what makes the document still readable — and exactly why the mark is not a security measure.

Anyone with the right tools can remove it. That is not a weakness of this tool; it is true of every visible watermark in every PDF ever made. What a watermark actually achieves is different, and genuinely valuable:

• Nobody can accidentally mistake a draft for the final version
• A printed copy carries its status on every sheet, even after being separated
• A leaked screenshot shows what it was — which is a real deterrent among people who might be identified
• It marks intent, so "I did not realise" stops being available

If you need a document that genuinely cannot be altered or copied, watermarking is the wrong tool — that calls for encryption and permissions, applied by a full PDF suite, and even then the protection is modest.

Strength: readable both ways

The single most common mistake is a watermark that is too strong. At 60% opacity across a page of text, the document becomes tiring to read, and people either ask for a clean copy or stop reading — either way the watermark has failed.

Around 20–30% is the range that works: unmistakable at a glance, invisible to the reading eye a second later. If the mark has to survive a photograph or a low-quality print, go a little heavier and larger rather than darker; size carries better than density.

Colour helps here too. Grey sits behind text politely. Red reads as urgent and is right for CONFIDENTIAL, but is also the most distracting, so it wants a lower strength than grey does.

Diagonal, and why

Watermarks are diagonal by convention and for two good reasons. A 45-degree line crosses more of the page than a horizontal one, so a single instance covers more ground. And it cannot be mistaken for part of the document, because nothing in a real document runs diagonally.

Straight is available for short marks in a corner, or where a diagonal line would clash with a design. Repeating the mark several times per page is the option to reach for when the concern is someone cropping a screenshot — one centred stamp is easy to cut around, six are not.

Nothing is re-rendered

Only the mark is added. The page content is not re-encoded, so text stays selectable, images keep their quality, and the file grows by almost nothing. A watermark tool that returns a much larger, blurrier file has flattened your pages into images to draw on them — which loses search, accessibility and quality all at once.

One consequence worth knowing: because the text underneath is untouched, a watermarked document is still fully searchable and still copyable. The watermark labels it; it does not seal it.

Nothing is uploaded

The document is read, previewed and rewritten in your browser. There is no server, so no account, no page cap and no second watermark advertising the tool.

That last point is not a joke: many free watermark sites add their own branding to your document alongside the mark you asked for. It is difficult to think of a worse outcome for a file whose entire purpose is to carry a specific message.
