Wind, traffic, a conversation happening behind you. Often the sound adds nothing and removing it is faster than fixing it.

Why this is instant and lossless
A video file is a container — MP4, MOV, MKV — and inside it are separate streams sitting alongside each other. One holds the picture. One holds the sound. They are stored independently and only brought together when something plays them.
That is the whole reason this is quick. Removing the sound does not mean processing the video: it means copying the picture stream across, byte for byte, and not copying the other one. Nothing is decoded, nothing is re-encoded, and no quality is lost, because the picture is never examined at all.
A two-hour recording mutes in about as long as it takes to copy the file, and the result is pixel-for-pixel identical to the original.
Most tools do this the expensive way
A lot of online muters re-encode the video while they are at it. That takes minutes instead of seconds, costs a generation of quality, and often adds a watermark to pay for the server it ran on. There is no technical reason for any of it — the operation genuinely is a copy.
Removing the track, or keeping a silent one

Removing the track is right nearly every time. The exception is real though: some video editors, some upload validators and some older players expect every video to carry audio, and a file with no audio stream at all makes them behave oddly — refusing the import, showing an error, or producing a timeline that will not line up. If something rejects your muted video, this is the first thing to try.
Muting and copyright claims
Worth being precise, because this is a common reason for landing here. Automatic copyright systems on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook match against the audio. A song playing in the background of a video you filmed yourself is enough to trigger one, even at low volume, even for a few seconds.
Removing the audio removes what those systems match against. It does not make anything legal that was not — if the picture itself is somebody else's, that is a separate question — but for the very common case of your own footage with somebody's music audible in it, muting is the fix.
What this does not do
It removes all of the sound, not some of it. Taking out background noise while keeping a voice, or removing music from under speech, is a different and much harder problem: it needs a model that guesses at what each source contributed, and the result is an approximation.
And muting a video for a section rather than all of it is editing, not muting — that needs a timeline, which is a different kind of tool.
Nothing is uploaded
The engine is a build of ffmpeg compiled to run in the browser. It downloads once, about 32 MB, and after that it is cached and works offline.
This matters more for video than for almost anything else. Video files are large, so uploading one means a long wait and a complete copy of your recording on a stranger's server — which is a strange thing to accept for an operation that is, technically, a file copy. Here it happens on your own machine, which is also why there is no size limit, no queue and no watermark.

Is the video uploaded anywhere?
No. It is processed in your browser using your own machine, so it never leaves your computer. That is also why there is no size limit and no queue.
Does muting reduce the video quality?
Not at all. The picture stream is copied byte for byte rather than re-encoded, so the result is identical to the original. Only the audio is left behind.
Why is it so fast?
Because nothing is being processed. Sound and picture are separate streams in the file, so removing the sound is a copy that leaves one of them out. A two-hour video takes about as long as copying the file.
Will this stop a copyright claim?
Content-matching systems match against the audio, so removing it removes what they detect. That solves the common case of your own footage with background music in it. It does not change anything about the picture itself.
What is the difference between the two options?
"Remove the track" leaves the audio out entirely and makes a smaller file. "Silent track" keeps an audio stream that contains silence, which some editors and upload systems expect. Use the first unless something rejects the result.
Can I mute only part of the video?
Not here — this removes all of the sound. Silencing a section needs a timeline, which is an editing job rather than a conversion.
Can I remove background noise but keep the voices?
No. That requires a model that separates one source from another and produces an approximation rather than the original. This removes the audio track as a whole.
