Working Days Calculator

Business days between two dates — with your weekend, your holidays, and no argument about whether the last day counts.

Runs on your device — nothing you type is sent anywhere

Monday to Friday is five days counting both, and four counting only the days in between.

Your weekend

Tap the days you do not work. Saturday and Sunday to start with, which is not the weekend everywhere.

Which days they are

No public holidays are built in. They differ by country and region and move by government decision, so a list here would go stale without knowing it. Add your own and this browser remembers them.

How it works

Three steps, and the counting runs in your browser.

STEP 01

Pick the two dates

It starts on the current month. Say whether the last day counts — that one choice is where most disagreements about date ranges come from.

STEP 02

Say which days are your weekend

Saturday and Sunday to begin with. Tap any day to add or remove it, because the working week is not the same everywhere.

STEP 03

Add the holidays that apply to you

Only the ones landing on a day you would have worked come off the total. They are remembered, so next time you only change the dates.

When this comes up

Working out a deadline

“Fifteen business days” is a real date once you know which days those are — and it moves if your holidays land inside the range.

Booking leave

How many days off a stretch of dates actually costs you, once the weekends and the public holidays inside it stop counting.

Invoicing by the day

Days worked in a month, and hours if you bill that way, without counting a calendar square by square.

Planning a project

Calendar weeks and working days are different numbers, and a plan built on the wrong one runs late by about two days a week.

Why two people counting the same dates disagree

Counting working days looks like subtraction and is not, because three things have to be settled before the arithmetic means anything — and pages that answer instantly have quietly settled all three on your behalf.

Does the last day count?

Monday the 2nd to Friday the 6th is five working days if you count both ends, and four if you count only the gap between them. Both are correct. They answer different questions, and neither is more natural than the other: “how long am I away” counts both, “how many days until” counts neither end.

This is the single commonest reason two people with the same calendar get different numbers, so this page asks rather than assumes, and says which it used underneath the answer.

The weekend is not Saturday and Sunday

It is in most of Europe and the Americas. Across much of the Middle East and North Africa the weekend is Friday and Saturday, in a few countries it is Thursday and Friday or Sunday alone, and plenty of people work a four-day week or a rota that has nothing to do with any of them.

So the days off are a setting here rather than a constant. Change them and every number on the page changes with them.

There is no holiday list here, on purpose

Public holidays are national and often regional, several move each year with the lunar or ecclesiastical calendar, and governments add and shift them by decree — a one-off royal holiday, a bridging day, a rescheduled election.

A table of them printed into this page would be wrong within a year and would have no way of knowing it was wrong. That is worse than having none, because a stale list looks exactly like a current one. So you add the dates that actually apply where you are, and your browser keeps them for next time.

One detail worth knowing: only a holiday landing on a day you would have worked comes off the total. One that falls on a Saturday costs you nothing, and counting it would understate the month.

A year is 261 working days, until it is not

A plain Monday-to-Friday year comes to 261 days, or 262 when the extra days line up that way — 2024 had 262, and 2028, despite also being a leap year, has 260. Subtract your public holidays from that and you have the number a salary is actually divided by.

It is also why calendar weeks and working days are worth keeping apart in a plan. Five weeks is thirty-five days on a calendar and twenty-five days of work, and a schedule built on the first number runs late by about two days a week.

Clock changes cannot break the count

Twice a year a local day is twenty-three or twenty-five hours long. Counting a date range by adding twenty-four hours at a time to a local date therefore skips or repeats a day somewhere in March and October — a whole working day wrong, in the months people most often count their leave. Everything here is counted in universal time, where every day is the same length.

Nothing you type is sent anywhere

The dates, the holidays, all of it stays in your browser. The holidays you add are stored on this device only, and there is no account and nothing transmitted.

Common questions

How do I calculate the working days between two dates?

Pick the two dates, say whether the last day counts, and mark which days are your weekend. This page counts every day in the range, leaves out your weekend days and any public holidays you have added, and shows the total along with how many of each weekday it contains.

How many working days are there in a year?

261 for a plain Monday-to-Friday year, or 262 when the days line up that way — 2024 had 262, and 2028 has 260 despite being a leap year. That is before public holidays, which come off the total and differ by country.

Should I count the last day or not?

It depends on the question. “How long am I away” counts both ends, so Monday to Friday is five days. “How many days until” counts neither, making it four. Contracts and notice periods usually say which they mean; when they do not, ask, because this is where the disagreement comes from.

Why are there no public holidays built in?

Because they differ by country and often by region, several move each year, and governments add and shift them by decree. A list printed into this page would be wrong within a year and unable to tell. Add the dates that apply to you and this browser keeps them for next time.

Can I set a weekend other than Saturday and Sunday?

Yes. Tap any day to mark it as a day you do not work. The weekend is Friday and Saturday across much of the Middle East and North Africa, and plenty of people work a four-day week or a rota, so it is a setting here rather than an assumption.

Do I need an account?

No, and nothing leaves your device. The holidays you add are stored in this browser only, so they are there next time and nowhere else.
