What makes Italy different
Italy is where online advice is most often wrong, and always in the same direction. A great many guides state flatly that glasses are banned in Italian passport photos. The Polizia di Stato's own photograph sheet says the opposite: glasses are acceptable provided they let the eyes be clearly made out and are clear and free of reflections. If you wear glasses every day, you may keep them on.
What catches people out
- Bring two identical prints to the Questura appointment. One is not enough and the second is not optional.
- Printed on matte paper, not glossy. Glossy prints reflect under the scanner and are a common reason for a photo being handed back.
- No older than six months, and the officer will look at whether it still resembles you rather than at the date on it.
- The appointment itself is booked through the Passaporto Online system with SPID or an electronic ID card — the photo is only one of the things to have ready.
Glossy paper is the quiet one — it looks better in your hand and reflects under the scanner, and the officer hands it straight back. After that it is a face too small in the frame: the rule is that the head fills roughly 70 to 80 per cent of the height, and a photo taken from too far away fails it.
Where the photo goes
Two identical prints, handed over at the Questura appointment. The appointment is booked through the Passaporto Online system using SPID or an electronic identity card, and the photographs are one item on a list that also includes the payment receipt and the old passport.
Printing 6 for the price of one
At 35 × 45 mm, 6 photos fit on a single 4 × 6 inch print — the cheapest product at any kiosk or online print service, against a booth that charges for a set of four.
Print at actual size and turn off "fit to page", "scale to fit" and borderless printing. Each of those resizes the image by a few percent, which is enough to push the head outside the 32–36 mm, about 70–80% of the frame that Polizia di Stato requires.
