Three to one, and less of it than you think
1500 by 500 pixels, 3:1, under 2 MB. Wider than a LinkedIn banner is tall, and with the same basic problem: a good deal of it is covered or trimmed.
The avatar sits on the bottom left
Your round profile picture overlaps the lower-left corner of the header and hangs below it. Roughly the leftmost sixth and the bottom third of that corner are gone, and how much depends on the layout the viewer is on.
The edges get trimmed at narrow widths
On a phone, or a narrow browser window, the header is cropped rather than scaled, and it is the sides that go. The safe region is the middle, clear of the bottom-left corner — put a logo or a line of text there and it survives every layout.

Two megabytes is the real constraint
1500 by 500 is not many pixels, so the limit is generous for a photograph and tight for anything with a lot of fine detail or noise. If an export lands over it, resizing to exactly 1500 wide usually solves it on its own; if not, saving as JPG rather than PNG will.
It changes with the theme
A header with a white background looks clean in light mode and like a bright slab in dark mode, and the profile it sits on may be either. A photograph or a mid-tone colour behaves the same in both. Something worth thinking about for ten seconds before it is on the profile for two years.
Cover or Contain, and what each throws away
Two ways to fit one shape into another, and the tool offers both.
Cover fills the frame completely and crops whatever does not fit. Nothing is distorted and nothing is padded; some of the picture is simply gone. This is what you want almost always.
Contain fits the whole image inside the frame and fills the leftover space with a colour you choose. Nothing is lost, but the picture is smaller and there are bars. Right when the whole frame matters — a poster, a diagram, a design you cannot cut.
Neither ever stretches. An image squashed to fit is the one mistake that cannot be undone by looking at it again later.
Nothing is uploaded
The resizing happens in your browser using your own processor, so the image never leaves your machine. That is why there is no file-size limit, no queue and no account, and why a batch of forty is limited by your computer rather than by somebody’s free tier.
