Half a megabyte is enough for almost everything

At 500 KB the trade largely disappears. Three of the four test images kept their full 4,000 by 3,000 — the tool never had to touch their dimensions, only the quality, and at a level nobody would notice without the original beside it.

Only the densest image, an outdoor scene with detail in every square inch, still had to come down, to 1,829 pixels wide. That is not a flaw in the compressor. There is genuinely more information in that picture, and information takes space.

A useful default for anything you are keeping

If you are compressing a set of photographs to archive or to send rather than to satisfy a specific limit, 500 KB is a sensible standing choice. It cuts a typical phone photo by around 80% while leaving a file that is still full resolution and still prints acceptably at ordinary sizes.

Below this, you start trading pixels. Above it, the returns get small quickly — a 1 MB version of the same photograph is very rarely visibly better.

Email, and the limit behind the limit

Most mail systems accept attachments up to 20 or 25 MB, but that ceiling is measured after encoding, which adds roughly a third. It is also shared across the whole message. Forty photographs at 500 KB is 20 MB before encoding and close to 27 MB after, which will bounce.

The practical rule is to keep a whole message under about 15 MB of actual files. At 500 KB each, that is around thirty images.

How the tool finds the size

It searches, rather than guessing. Quality is bisected to find the highest setting that still fits, and if no quality setting fits — which is normal at small targets — the picture is scaled down and the search runs again, until the largest version that fits under the limit is found.

That ordering matters. Turning quality to the floor on a full-size image produces something both ugly and, very often, still over the limit. Fewer pixels at a decent quality is the better trade almost every time, and it is the one this tool makes.

If a target genuinely cannot be reached, the result is shown in red with what it missed by, rather than handed back in green as though it had worked.

Nothing is uploaded

The compression happens in your browser, using your own processor. The photograph is never transmitted, which means there is no queue, no file-size ceiling imposed by a server, and no copy of your picture sitting on somebody else's disk afterwards.

It also means the tool works with no connection at all once the page has loaded.

Common questions

Will I lose resolution at 500 KB?

Usually not. Three of four test images kept their full 4,000 by 3,000, with only the quality reduced. The exception was a dense outdoor scene, which came down to 1,829 pixels wide — detailed pictures genuinely contain more to store.

How many 500 KB photos fit in one email?

Around thirty. Mail systems typically cap attachments at 20 to 25 MB, but that is measured after encoding, which adds about a third, and it covers the whole message. Keeping the actual files under roughly 15 MB is the reliable rule.

Is 500 KB good enough to print?

At ordinary sizes, yes, provided the resolution was kept — and at this target it usually is. Print wants far more pixels per inch than a screen, so what matters is the dimensions rather than the file size, and the tool reports both.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The compression runs in your browser on your own processor, so the image never leaves the machine. There is no queue, no server-side size ceiling, and no copy left behind afterwards.
